Log Cabin Chair – Log Furniture Part 7

By far the most time consuming part of the process is finding, cutting, hauling and sculpting the backs and seats featured by artisan Mitchell Dillman of Colorado Rockn Logs as demonstrated on logfurniturehowto.com. Using Ponderosa Pine salvage. In our part of Oregon the pine is dying from what is know as Black Pineleaf Scale (Nuculaspis Calfornica). Regardless of the cause of death, Pine will turn blue if not kept cool and moist. Also known as ‘Blue & Buggy’ Pine. Today we are ripping the blocks to sculpt into backs and seats. I am using my falling saws (Husqvarna 372) – NOT RECOMMENDED – but not going to buy another saw for the job. Putting a short bar on a large saw is REALLY NOT RECOMMENDED. A lot of power and chain speed on a short bar puts the balance closer to your body making the likelihood of kickback imminent and unavoidable.

@1963impala2dr The old saw was a 125 McCulloch. They were the real deal back in the day. McCulloch also made go cart engines, we would replace the stock jug and piston with the jug and piston from the go cart motors; put a 26 jet in the carburetor turn em down till the muffler turned white and its off to the races! Those were the days!

@1963impala2dr We would run Aviation fuel and mix regular 30wt non detergent oil in the gas. It burnt your eyes but they would eat the wood.
